One of Campbell’s customers wanted a saddle stitched booklet with a gatefold on the back cover. A gatefold is a fold-out panel that opens beyond the trim size of the booklet, creating additional space for content without adding pages or crowding the main layout.
The goal was to create room for one more layer of information while preserving the space already needed for product photography, technical details, and core copy.
The idea was simple. Producing it well was not. Because only the back page of the cover extended beyond the rest of the booklet, the format required a stitching capability Campbell did not yet have. Campbell chose to invest in a new saddle stitcher that could produce the format cleanly and at much higher speed.
The customer needed more room in the booklet, but the existing pages were already carrying the core message. Product imagery, technical information, and copy all needed to stay clear and well organized.
A back-cover gatefold solved the layout problem, but it also introduced a production challenge. This was not a standard stitched booklet. The cover had to extend beyond the rest of the piece while still finishing cleanly and reading as a polished, intentional format.
Campbell invested in a new saddle stitcher that made the format possible at production speed.
That investment gave Campbell the ability to produce the booklet with the custom back-cover gatefold while keeping the rest of the piece clean and conventional. The new stitcher also runs at least three times faster than the previous setup, improving efficiency along with capability.
Just as importantly, the investment expanded what Campbell could offer customers who needed something more tailored than a standard stitched booklet.
The finished booklet gave the customer a better way to organize content without overloading the main pages. The gatefold created a dedicated panel for supporting information while preserving the clarity of the rest of the booklet.
The format has remained in use because it solved the original problem well. It also gave Campbell a new capability: producing more distinctive booklet formats with greater flexibility and speed than before.
